In 1966, during her experience in Fontem, Cameroon, Chiara Lubich started talking about inculturation in the Focolare Movement in Africa. Since then, and especially in 1992, she initiated the “School of Inculturation” in Nairobi, Kenya. Between 1995-1998 a "Centre of Inculturation" was erected at the Focolare model village "Mariapolis Piero" in Kenya. This Centre has since played a pivotal role in orchestrating the conceptualization, implementation, and archival documentation of the "Schools of Inculturation," as well as overseeing the publication of related research and documents.
The Center has embarked on numerous collaborative initiatives to date, partnering with various organizations. These include joint efforts with the Focolare Movement Eastern Africa Project Office, aimed at fostering community development and social transformation. Additionally, collaborations with institutions such as the RISALAT International Institute for Islamic Studies in Qum, Iran, under the leadership of Dr. Mohammed Ali Shomali, have facilitated interreligious and interfaith dialogue, promoting mutual understanding and harmony.
Furthermore, partnerships with organizations like The Phyto-biotechnology Research Foundation Bamenda, Cameroon and STK Bio-Tech Ltd, Owerri, Nigeria, have been instrumental in advancing projects related to the production of herbal medicines derived from plant extracts, contributing to health and wellness initiatives within communities. These collaborations underscore the Center's commitment to holistic engagement and interdisciplinary approaches in addressing diverse societal challenges.
